Color Pencils On Dark Cardstock

When I heard that The Hedgehog Hollow August 2019 kit featured Alex Syberia designs I said, “Yaaas!” I love her style and knew the beautiful blooms would be perfect for coloring with our favorite mediums. Large florals are my jam!! Today, I’m featuring color pencils on dark and shimmer cardstock.

The video below shows my process for both cards as well as some tips for a few correcting mistakes. I like to leave the oops in so we can learn together!

Choosing Dark Cardstock

You can use any colored cardstock you have in your stash. Most colored cardstock has a bit of tooth or texture to it which is perfect for colored pencils. You want a little texture for the pencils to grab onto. I also find colors blend better on textured paper.

Today, I’ve chosen Basis Navy cardstock and Stardream Metallic Punch cardstock from cutcardstock.com. I hadn’t used color pencils on shimmer paper before, so I thought it’d be fun to experiment.

Ink & Color Pencils

I stamped the images in inks that coordinated with their respective cardstocks to create a tone on tone effect appropriate for no-line coloring.

• Altenew Azurite for the navy cardstock
• Altenew Purple Wine for the purple cardstock

Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils in the following colors were used:

• White
• Black
• Warm Grey V
• Dark Indigo
• Hellioblue-Reddish
• Ultramarine
• Light Ultramarine
• Magenta
• Middle Purple Pink
• Earth Green Yellowish
• Light Green

For tips on coloring technique, I recommend watching the video. I jumped right into coloring without testing the pencils on each cardstock, so right out of the gate, I had a mistake that needed fixing. Fortunately, it mended well.
