Altenew Serenity Release
Let’s take a closer look at the full release before we get started. There are new creative stencils enamel dots and Creative Cutouts, a clever new product line.
Altenew Creative Cutouts are finely detailed laser-cut 80 lb white cardstock. The first two designs are a collection of Nested Wreaths in three sizes and a 12×12 Moroccan Mosaic pattern. Stay tuned for a bit of watercolor Nested Wreath!
Creative Cutouts: Nested Wreath Watercolor Card
Today’s post is all about watercolor so let’s get to it! This is my first time using Creative Cutouts and though they’re delicate, I wanted to see how they would do with watercolor.
For the solid green wreath I took Spring Garden Watercolor Brush Markers directly to the laser cutout. I used Sweet Leaf, Lime, and Turquoise. Next, I ink smooshed the lighter wreath in the leftover ink on my glass mat.
Although these cutouts are 80 lb weight, they are not cover weight. Meaning they’re not as thick and hearty as your heavyweight cardstock. Therefore, be cautious with wet mediums. I used a lot of liquid watercolors and gingerly moved them to the side with tweezers to air dry.
Finish the card with a Mega Label Love sentiment and Jet Black Ink Spray splatter. Ad here the solid green wreath directly to the card front and pop up the ink smooshed wreath.
Watercolor Feathery Stencil Card
I adore the Feathery Stencil and had to watercolor it! First, I sprayed the back of the stencil with Pixie Spray, let the spray dry for 1 minute, and adhered it to a piece of Altenew Watercolor Paper Set.
Spritz your stencil covered watercolor paper with water and drop in Turquoise, Emerald, and Evening Gray Watercolor Brush Marker pigment. Allow the colors to mix, but not to much. This technique looks best when there are distinct areas of each color.
DIY Watercolor Embossing Paste
Grab your shades, because this watercolor tinted Altenew Embossing Paste is mega vivid! Altenew Trellis Stencils lends a perfect geometric background pattern to this Terrific Tag.
Here I made some DIY embossing paste by coloring white Altenew Embossing Paste with Emerald and Midnight Violet Watercolor Brush Markers.
Watercolor Mountain Scene Stencil Card
This Mountain Scene Stencil Watercolor card is my favorite of the bunch. What a clever stencil and I absolutely love how it looks watercolored! The best part is it’s so easy to do!
This time I switched over to Tropical Forest Watercolor Brush Markers and used Lava Rock for the mountains and Dusk and Moss for the forest.
I dried the watercolor with a heat tool in between sections of the mountain and prior to adding the forest. However, you might get a cool look too without drying.
That’s a wrap on these clever watercolor stencil techniques. Let me know what you think below. Are you going to try watercolor with your stencils?

Hi Amber 🙂 Your cards are so serene and the tag is vibrant!!! You’ve showcased this new release so well! Thanks for inspiring me 🙂
Love the feathered stencil card
Such gorgeous cards! Great colors…
Thanks for sharing.
I LOVE your cards, and the video was excellent! What you did with the wreaths was gorgeous, and I really like the hanging-off-the-edge technique. But showing that it is actually possible to water color – or use wet medium – with stencils was awesome! The mountains and trees you did really was ideal at showing how well the wet color worked (besides I’m partial to mountains). THANK YOU for sharing with and teaching us!
I love all your projects! The ink smooshing technique gave your wreath such a pretty look!
Love these, the feathery stencil and mountain scene are my favorites. Beautiful!
awesome cards and tags, great use of the new products!

Oh a great set. You inspired me to try the watercolor paint smooshing. The wreath I love. The feather stencil I favor as feathers are a fav of mine. The texture tag was nice as well. As a New Orleans resident, happy to hear you noted Mardi Gras. The mountain stencil is great for me the non sketch artist, and, surprise a mountain scene. Lovely work Amber.

Wow. It is amazing what one can do with simple stencils! Although I’m not sure the mountain scene qualifies as a “simple” stencil, but still, it’s fun to see new ideas for playing with stencils! TFS!
