Altenew April 2019 Release Blog Hop + Giveaway

I’m featuring A Study in Watercolor, Weekend Doodles, Geometric Landscape, and Fancy Hello Die today so let’s get started!

Watercolor Techniques for Background Washes & Stamping

A Study in Watercolor Stamp Set

A study in watercolor is a silhouette stamp set which you can pair with your favorite coloring medium and techniques. Today, I’m stamping with water and watercolor brush markers.

Stamp with Water & Altenew Watercolor Brush Markers

Watercolor Wash Background Panels

Let’s start with some watercolor backgrounds. I made 3 panels and will share the, orange panel, in the Watercolor Doodles card video.

Watercolor Wash Background Techniques

To create the panels I covered the watercolor paper with clean water and dropped in pigment from Altenew Watercolor Brush Markers Tropical Fiesta set.

Blue Green Panel: Desert Night, Lime, & Turquoise
Pink & Gray Panel: Lava Rock & Purple Wine

While the panels were drying I created the flowers. Be sure to check out the video to see the process of stamping in water & watercolor in action.

Stamping with Water & Watercolor Brush Markers

This technique can be done with a MISTI or stamp blocks and both techniques are shown in the video.

Start by wetting the stamp with a brush saturated with clean clear water. Stamp the water onto the paper once or twice. This will wet the paper setting the stage for a wet on wet technique. The pigment that we add next will only travel in the wet area which will confine the pigment to the water stamped area.

Stamping with water & watercolor brush markers for loose watercolor look

Then, take your Altenew Watercolor Brush Markers directly to the stamp. Paint on small areas of color, such as small strokes of green on the leaves and stamp. As you can see above, the green travels within the wet area. This will create beautiful color mixing as additional layers of colors are added.

Layering colors in MISTI

Continue adding colors until you reach the desired color saturation and depth. Die cut or fussy cut the images once they are dry.

Weekend Doodles & Geometric Landscape Stamp Sets

This card is definitely the highlight of the Altenew Autumn Blaze phase I’m in at the moment! I love my Sea Shores, but it’s nice to take a detour from time to time.

Altenew Weekend Doodles and Geometric Landscape

Background Panel

All the details to make the highly pigmented watercolor wash background & floral elements are in the video below.

Once the watercolor panel was dry, I loaded it up in my MISTI and stamped the Geometric Landscape Stamp with Altenew Permanent Black Ink.

Stamping Pattern Paper

Originally, I stamped the Weekend Doodles images on white cardstock, however, it seemed a bit boring and unfinished. So, I switched gears and stamped the images on a piece of yellow and orange pattern paper from the Enchanting Washes Paper Pack.

I aligned a couple of the flower centers with the orange dots on the paper and stamped in Permanent Black ink. In order to prevent smearing, I clear heat embossed them. Do this at your own discretion, as I’ve heard using alcohol markers on embossed images can ruin your nibs. I did not see an impact on my nibs.

Coloring Pattern Paper

The pattern paper is a bit glossy which makes blending alcohol markers a dream! The ink doesn’t absorb into the paper as quickly so you don’t need to lay down as much ink for good blends. I used the following Altenew Artist Markers:

Leaves: Evergreen G554, Forest Glades G715, & Frayed Leaf G702 (Set A)
Yellow Flowers: Mango Smoothie Y204 (Set C)Y
Pink & Yellow Flowers: Cotton Candy R403 & Blush R400 (Set C)
Orange Shadow: Autumn Blaze Y608 (Set E)

Loose watercolour has always been my favourite medium but I struggle so much with having any attempt at it look decent, so I appreciate that you showed your processes. The first two, but especially the one with the watercolour wash background is a card I’d just love to be able to reproduce. All of your cards are rock star! Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
