Technique Mashup | Watercolor, Copics & More

Welcome to the hop! Thanks for joining me today. I have 6 cards and lots of techniques to share as I was particularly inspired by this release!!

Altenew August 2019 Stamp/Die/Stencil Release Blog Hop + Giveaway

If you’ve made your way here from Svitlana Shayevich‘s blog, then you’re right on track. I just love her bold style, don’t you? If you’d like to start at the beginning, head over to the Altenew Card Blog.

Let’s take a closer look at this whimsical release. There is a mix of line art, folk art papercuts, modern geometrics, and classic roses. For more information, click here or the image below.

Dot Art & Polish Papercuts 3D Die

Now that this impressive release has been introduced, let’s kick off this hop with a modern folksy card.

Look at these chevrons! Definitely a new favorite for a quick modern background! Pick your color palette and stamp away! Here I’ve used Olive, Chamomile, and Coral Bliss Crisp Dye Inks.

The Polish Papercuts 3D Dies are so cheerful. I die cut them from the following metallic/shimmer cardstocks from CutCardStock.com:

  • Curious Metallic Lime
  • Curious Metallic Fairway
  • Curious Metallic White Gold (colored with Coral Berry Artist Marker)
  • Stardream Metallic Gold

Pleasant Pansy 3D Die & Feathered Leaf Stencil

Continuing with 3D dies we’ve got Pleasant Pansy 3D Die. This set has the perfect amount of detail while being super easy to layer.

Pansies have always looked like little lions to me, so I added a bit of a jungle vibe with Feathered Leaf Stencil background. The center is ink blended with Bamboo and the border is Olive and Moss Crisp Dye Inks.

I’ve used the metallic cardstocks below again from CutCardStock.com.

  • Stardream Metallic Kunzite
  • Stardream Metallic Amethyst
  • Stardream Metallic Punch
  • Curious Metallic Violette
  • Curious Metallic Lime
  • Curious Metallic Fairway
  • Curious Metallic Botanic

Playful Plumeria & Block Print

Plumeria is one of my favorite flowers and Altenew has done them proud in this gorgeous set! The Block Print stamp was perfect to enhance the tropical vibe.

Here, I used the layer stamps to create an underpainting for no-line watercolor. I added detail with Polychromos pencils and then after all that effort, I clear heat embossed the entire flower. Eek!

I melted 3 coats of clear embossing powder on the flowers and leaves to create a high gloss finish. Praise be that it worked out!!!

Wavy Roses & Halftone Stencil

We’re moving on to some funky florals with the line art of Wavy Roses Stamp Set. These wide-open spaces are perfect for a variety of techniques.

Check out the video to see how I used the Wavy Rose Mask/Stencil with the Halftone Stencil to create this background.

I chose to color with Altenew Artist Markers. Altenew Artist Markers used:

  • Red Cosmos (Set A)
  • Warm & Cozy (Set E)
  • Tropical Forest (Set E)

Simply the Best & Leaf Clusters

Check out the size of this bloom! If you loved the mega bloom from Floral Art, you’re gonna love this one too. Leaf clusters with Bamboo and Olive Crisp Dye Inks created an organic backdrop.

I used the rock ‘n roll technique to ink up this 3 layer mega bloom. This helped to create dimension with graduated color. Altenew Crisp Dye Inks used:

  • Sunray
  • Coral Bliss
  • Heart Beat

I stamped 2 blooms, fussy cut the center of the 2nd, popped it up, and curled the petals for even more dimension. This bloom was coated with 3 layers of clear embossing as well. Just look at that shine!

Simply the Best & Block Print

We’re ending the post with the dark horse of the bunch, lots of high contrast black and bright Tide Blue Crisp Dye Ink.

In this rendition, I stamped the 2nd layer in blue and the 3rd layer in black. The 1st layer was omitted and hand-drawn lines were added to the white petals.

And that’s a wrap, crafty friends! I had a blast with this release and I hope you’ve found some inspiration to spark creativity in your craft room. What made it onto your wishlist this release?

  15. Denise Kitts-Wadlow says:

Oh my goodness! You have really outdone yourself. There isn’t a single design or technique in any of your cards that outshines the rest! Absolutely stunning, and so very creative, each and every one. I’ve never tried heat embossing on top of colored pencil coloring. I did understand that correctly, didn’t I? I had an “EEK” moment there for you too, afraid the coloring from the pencil would also melt, but your card turned out beautifully. Well, that’s how you find out what works, and what doesn’t, isn’t it? Great job on everything. 💞

    1. Thank you, Denise! I’m so thrilled you like the designs!! Yes, it was an Eek moment for sure!! And you’re correct it was clear embossing over watercolor and color pencil. Sometimes you’ve got to take the leap and hope for the best. Worked out this time. 😀🤗

  16. Lana Branham says:

  19. Hi Amber 🙂 Your cards and techniques are amazing! Artistry superb! Thanks for inspiring me 🙂

  20. I am just getting into card making and I want to make everything! Beautiful tutorials!! On a limited budget what tools would you recommend the most?

    1. Hello Keegan! Welcome to card making. You’re going to love it!

For a limited budget, I would start with a few stamp blocks. Altenew has a good set with multiple sizes. Save up for an Original size MISTI, you’ll want one for techniques as you progress. Put that on your Christmas list. I still use blocks too.

Hm, I started to write more, but let me put together a proper list and send it to you.

I’ll be back in touch soon!!

    2. For a super basic start, I would get stamp blocks, a trimmer, 80lb white cardstock, black ink pad, and a couple of stamp sets that could be used year-round.

You can color with anything you have, pencils, watercolors, etc. Doesn’t need to be expensive you could even start with Crayola. Find the medium you enjoy most, then get the nicer sets.

Here are the tools I use daily when making cards. The items listed after the white cardstock are pricier things for a wishlist. You can get started without them. https://linkdeli.com/view/b919f7b4-3170-4e8b-b9bd-76f9e61c5c6f

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by new releases, new tools, gadgets, etc. It takes most people years to build up their stash and some people who are blogging and doing videos receive products to feature in blog hops. So remember, we all started with no supplies.

When purchasing stamps, I recommend sets that can be used year-round. Also buy, what you really love and are drawn to. If you’re a critter person, get critters, if you’re a flower person, get those. You’ll be much happier in the long run!

The trimmer I listed is a good starter trimmer. You also have the ability to score your cardstock with it. I took off the scoring blade and used a bone folder to score. I’m still on the lookout for a trimmer that I truly love!

Enjoy the process of narrowing down and prioritizing your wishlist! You’re going to love card making!!
