Altenew Build-A-Flower: Poppy Hop
Welcome!! If you reached this post from the lovely Svitlana Shayevich’s blog then you’re right on track. A full list of hop participants is below along with giveaway details.
I just love poppies so I was so excited to join this hop! Aside from poppies being beautiful and our California state flower, a poppy was the first thing I drew that made me think I might have some artistic talent. So it seemed fitting to add my own artistic flair to this gorgeous layering set from Altenew. Video tutorials, products, & bonus card below.
For the first card, I added hand drawn lines to accentuate the curves and details of the flowers. I started by stamping both flowers on yellow cardstock with alcohol safe ink. I stamped the second layer with clear embossing ink. while this is not readily visible on the light cardstock, it did help to guide my hand drawn pen strokes.
Hand drawn pen accents were done with a Sakura Micron PN pen in black ink. Be sure to follow the contour of the petal and shadow when adding your lines.
After pen strokes were complete I die cut the images and added splatter to an A2 sized white piece of cardstock with Altenew Jet Black and White Ink Spray. I used Altenew Watercolor Pan set in Citrus Burst. I cut 3 black cardstock strips and white heat embossed the sentiment onto one.
The card was assembled by popping up the strips and flowers on an A2 sized kraft panel. Next up I opted for white ink on red and kraft paper.
The process for this card was similar, however, I used a Sakura White Gelly Roll pen and kept the strokes further apart. I added 2 of the smaller stamped elements and Copic colored the small flower.
Next up, I decided to go simple and shifted to tone on tone with clear embossing ink for the next 2 cards.
These 2 cards are super simple yet striking. Stamp the largest flower outline and detail layer with clear embossing ink on kraft and red cardstock.
Tip: For best results use a dark cardstock when watermarking with clear ink and be sure to stamp off the edge of the paper to create the look of design paper.
Once the backgrounds are complete, stamp and emboss desired sentiments on black strips of cardstock and pop up with foam tape.
And here’s a bonus card for the road in a completely different color palette.
This variation on the first set of cards starts by die cutting 2 flowers out of a light grey panel. I then stamped and embossed flowers as before and added white accents to one.
The 2 dark gray flowers are inlaid into the negative spaces while the front white accent flower is popped up. The card front was spattered with Jet Black and White Altenew Ink Spray. Well, that’s a wrap.

Thank you Gwen!
Oh I love the added detailed lines you put on the flowers on the first two cards! That really adds a different look to this poppy set.
Love your color choices. Stunning cards. TFS
Wow, these are fabulous. I love all your added penwork. Because I don’t consider myself particularly artistic, I never think to add to stamp sets, but I might need to try this. And your use of monochrome (or duochrome) is amazing. I’m definitely going to have to try the outline and detail in versamark, because that is so elegant. Thanks for sharing all these great ideas with us!
