Layer Stamped & Embossed Backgrounds
Layer stamps create beautiful focal points and they can also make gorgeous background panels. I’m back with more inspiration for The Hedgehog Hollow June 2019 subscription box.
Layer Stamping
Choose a light or medium tone for the solid base layer. For the seahorses and conch shells, I used Altenew Vanilla Cream, and for the coral, I used Altenew Coral Bliss. My card fronts are Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 80 lb cardstock.
Start your pattern in the center and work your way out turning the stamp as desired. Be sure to stamp off the page to complete the pattern paper appearance.
Coral Background
After filling the background with the solid stamp, I treated the panel with an antistatic powder tool. I inked up the coral outline image with clear embossing ink and stamped over the solid images.
Don’t worry if your images aren’t perfectly aligned, it won’t be noticeable. I sprinkled Altenew Translucent Pearl embossing powder over the panel and heat set it. This powder has a fine iridescent glitter that’s super sparkly. I love how the tone on tone embossed outline creates shading!
Seahorse Background
For the seahorses, I wanted a variation of color rather than tone on tone like the coral. When I inked up the base layer with Vanilla Cream I only tapped the stamp on the pad once.
This created an uneven stamping of the base layer, where some areas were saturated and other areas didn’t have any ink. Next, I stamped the outline layer in Altenew Pink Pearl. The areas without Vanilla Cream appear pinker, such as the back head on several seahorses below. The detail in this stamp is awesome!
All that’s left is to stamp the outline one more time in clear embossing ink and heat set it.
Conch Shell Background
So technically this isn’t a layering stamp because there’s one image, but that didn’t stop me from layering! Before I started stamping, I cut off the connected “conch shell” sentiment.
First, I stamped the background in Vanilla Cream then I came back and stamped it again in Pink Pearl. Again, don’t worry if your stamping isn’t perfect. Take a look at the closeup and you’ll see some of mine are offset, but it still looks pretty!
Stamp a 3rd time with clear embossing ink and heat emboss the images.
Sentiments
The sentiments are all from the subscription box and stamped in black pigment ink on Curious Metallic Gold cardstock from cutcardstock.com.
The other 2 layers are Bazzill 40 lb vellum and Curious Translucent Gold 27 lb Text Vellum. Each layer is die cut with Altenew Nesting Labels Die Set.
I popped up the top 2 layers on foam tape and adhered the largest layer directly to the card front hiding the glue tape under the solid layer.
