Terrific Texture With Embossing Paste
Add terrific texture and color to your handmade cards with DIY colored embossing paste. This episode of Color Connection with Amber features the Altenew April 2020 Inspiration Challenge color scheme and Precious Blooms Stamp & Die Bundle.
Our Inspiration Challenge photo, taken by Nicole Watt, has a fabulous lava rock background with multiple shades of gray. That fantastic texture kicked off today’s card designs.
Altenew Embossing paste is a quick and easy way to add texture to your cards. But here’s the thing, variety is the spice of life and sometimes you want more than white embossing paste. No worries, color your embossing paste with mediums you have on hand.

Soft Gray Stone Wall
Altenew Stone Wall Stencil is definitely a staple in my stash to evoke a natural organic feel. It’s an ideal backdrop to mimic the look of stacked stones.
As you can see, I opted for soft gray stones. To create light gray embossing paste I added several drops of Altenew Morning Frost Re-Inker. If you don’t have re-inkers you can use Watercolor Brush Markers & Refills, Artist Marker Refills, or smoosh your ink pads on a mat and mix it with embossing paste.
Oops, don’t let the ink cubes in the photo fool you. I used Peach Perfect, Coral BERRY, and Industrial Diamond Crisp Dye Inks with the Precious Blooms Stamp & Die Bundle.
Bold Black Bubble Wrap
After the soft gray, I was definitely craving some high contrast black. So I added Industrial Diamond and Jet Black Re-inkers to the soft gray embossing paste. Aptly, it looked like a lava rock slurry.
Jet Black cooled the warm gray color. Therefore, if you want to keep the paste on the warm side stick with the Rock Collection or Warm Gray Re-inkers.
Even though the Altenew Bubble Wrap Stencil is symmetrical, it’s easy to create an irregular look by partially adding paste to some of the bubbles.
If you can’t decide on the color for a die-cut sentiment, cut several colors. Once you pick the best color, stack the rest.
This adds dimension and bit of extra color and interest. Altenew Bold Greetings Die set is one of my faves due to the font style and because all of the letters are connected for easy stacking.
The sub-sentiment is Altenew Sentiment Strips 2 stamped on Basis Coral Cardstock from CutCardStock.com.
Which is your favorite? Do you prefer the soft gray or high-contrast black?
