What Inspires You?

Do you often sit down to create art, but don’t know where to start? What do you do to get inspired? Pinterest and Unsplash.com are sources that get my creative wheels turning.

But, sometimes I lean towards art books from favorite artists like Ernst Haeckel. Today, I used a book called Botanicum, illustrated by Katie Scott and authored by Kathy Willis. I have this on Kindle and I actually thought it was one of my Ernst Haeckel books.

Here I recreated a couple of Katie Scott‘s illustrations from Botanicum. When you create projects inspired by another artist’s work, you should credit the artist and the projects should be for personal use. I would not, for instance, sell prints of this journal page.

Watercolor + Doodles Video Tutorial

This video starts off with free-hand watercolor without a sketch. After the base layer and shadows are built up I show you how to add details to enhance the shapes.

The doodles are super easy. For some, I go straight to doodling with a Posca acrylic paint pen. With others, I sketch them with a pencil first.

Detailed Watercolor + Doodles

Watch the video for instructions on how to add detail to watercolor images. While I don’t reiterate the process here, I do want to share closeups of the detailed watercolor + doodles.
